In early 2005, I was staying in Amritapuri, an ashram owned by Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the Hugging Saint, affectionately known as Amma.
One night, I received darshan in dreamtime from Mahavatar Babaji, made famous in Paramahansa Yogananda’s book “Autobiography of a Yogi”.
“Babaji was giving darshan. He was calling the names of the people one by one to go up and see Him. I was trying to find a place to sit. The first place I found I thought it too far from Him and I decided to sit nearer. Suddenly, He called my name, “Tina? Tina?” I went up to Him and knelt down and I said, “Babaji!” He consulted the piece of paper in His Hand and said, “It says here that you have brought some goods to sell to me?” (Frankly, I am quite sure He knew why I was there and was just trying to pull my leg.) “No!” I replied, “I have a question to ask,” I said, as I dug in my pocket for the paper. I had written it on a tiny scrap of paper. As I took it out and was trying to unfold it, Babaji indicated to me to give it to Him to read. I handed it to Him and pointed to the sentence, “Amma made us two.” He looked up at me going, “And so?” “Babaji,” I said, as I looked at Him very seriously and intensely, “Babaji, please give me God-realization.” “Yes,” He said. “In this lifetime,” I carried on. Again He said, “Yes! You’ll get it in this lifetime!” He then extended His Hand towards me, palm down, and I grabbed it and began to kiss it fervently, all the while saying within myself, “Babaji, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!” He held my hand and didn’t withdraw it. I kept holding His Hand until I woke up.
When I woke up and realized what had happened, I was so grateful and awed. “Om Namah Shivaya, Babaji, Om Namah Shivaya!” I kept repeating this again and again.” (DT 18 Feb 2005)
This was the first time Babaji interacted with me. At the time, I did not realise that only one’s true spiritual master could give such a promise. After this dreamtime event, I was led by Babaji to the knowledge of the deathless life, unconditional self-surrender to God consciousness.
Later on, when I was going through my 5 year walk of the hell worlds (read my book Global Intervention), Babaji resurfaced to help me. He is an amazing spiritual master. I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing.
When I was about to be initiated by my present spiritual master, the mystic I mentioned in my book, he told me his spiritual lineage and my jaw dropped. I was being initiated into Mahavatar Babaji’s lineage.
This spiritual lineage starts with Lord Shiva, who was Agastyar’s spiritual master. From Agastyar is Boganathar, then Babaji, Lahiri Mahasiya and Sri Yukteswar.
Sri Yukteswar met my mystic’s spiritual master, who at the time of the meeting was not ready, but Sri Yukteswar had already earmarked him to be initiated in later years. When that time finally came around, one of Sri Yukteswar’s successors initiated him.
When I finally came to know all this, I realised the reason I had Babaji’s darshan, His promise to me and His divine help during my walk through the hell worlds. As my mystic told me, one cannot come to Babaji’s lineage if it was not your karma to do so.
In this spiritual lineage, not every branch involves Kriya Yoga. My mystic and his spiritual master before him, dealt with human problems of everyday life, personal, relationships, work, business, spiritual, etc. I continue to do the same.
